mosetta speed checks
mosetta builds websites out of small pieces of code called blocks. When someone opens a page, a Cloudflare server close to them gathers the blocks the page needs, runs them and sends back the finished page. This check builds a test website on real Cloudflare servers and visits it in different ways — a first visit, many visits in a row, a crowd at once, very large pages, deliberately faulty code — to make sure nothing breaks, and to measure how long each visit takes, so that a change that makes the platform slower is noticed.

- Score
- One number for the whole run. 100 means every measure is as fast as this check has ever reliably been from this location; 92 means about 8% slower than that on the whole, 105 — faster than ever. It shows the trend; a single measure that got much slower moves it only a few points, so such measures are flagged on their own.
- Best level
- The fastest a measure has reliably been: the best of the middle values of any five runs in a row. One lucky run does not count — timings on shared servers vary by tens of percent from run to run.
- Usual
- The middle value of the last ten runs from the same location. A measure is called slower than usual when it is more than 30% and 50 ms over it — once there are at least three runs to compare with.
- Location
- The Cloudflare data centre that served the visits, named by its city. The test machine sits in one place, so its visits go to the nearest location. Locations differ a lot in speed, so runs are only compared with runs from the same location.
- First visit
- A visit nobody has made before: the server has to fetch the code and start it, which takes seconds. Every later visit reuses what is already running.
- Usual and slow visit
- Out of many visits, the usual one is the middle one — half are faster (often written p50); the slow one is faster than only one in ten (p90).
- Gathering the code
- Fetching the blocks a page needs and starting them on the server — what makes a first visit slow.
- Drawing the page
- Running the blocks to produce the page's HTML, the text a browser shows.
- Copy of the site
- Each Cloudflare server keeps its own running copy of a site. A new copy costs its first visitor the start-up time; more copies means more first visits.
